LIGHTHOUSE AND GATEWAY CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE!

The Port of Kennewick began construction on Phase 1 of the Shoreline Restoration Project in 2009.  This phase involved construction of a 63 foot wide, 26 foot tall Gateway feature that now welcomes visitors to Clover Island and to Historic Downtown Kennewick.  Finished with natural stone and galvanized steel, with subtle LED reflected lighting under the archway, this archway is only eclipsed by the Lighthouse structure.

Now complete, the 62 foot tall Lighthouse is the only fully functioning lighthouse on the Columbia River.  The United States Coast Guard furnished a solar powered LED beacon which has been placed inside the lighthouse gallery.  They also registered the structure as a working navigational aid for boaters on the Columbia.  The main lighthouse structure was made in 4 precast concrete panel sections.  Each panel was lifted separately and set into place on the foundation.  The top structure was prefabricated and lifted into place as a single completed section. This is the first lighthouse constructed since the Charleston, South Carolina lighthouse was built in 1962.

At the base of the lighthouse is an attractive small pedestrian Plaza.  This Plaza will serve as a gathering place and viewing area for people utilizing the future shoreline path system on the island.

The Lighthouse dedication ceremony was held on May 20th, 2010.
